Indoor volatile and semi-volatile organic toxic compounds: Need for global action

نویسندگان

چکیده

Indoor air pollution results in mortalities worldwide, burdening especially the low- and middle-income countries. The volatile semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs SVOCs) emitted from indoor structures furniture materials are important sources of pollution. Exposure to VOCs, such as formaldehyde benzene, has been associated with higher risk reproductive problems, respiratory complications, immune suppression, cancers, dementia. SVOCs typically found carpets, textiles, furniture, electronics cosmetics. These chemicals also neurotoxic, inducing a number adverse health effects, behavioral changes, learning disability, impairment locomotor activity. If not mitigated, will continue impose socioeconomic burden on both individuals societies. Solutions curb their environmental occurrences include those that reduce/eliminate material VOCs/SVOCs increase removal, including phytoremediation metal-organic frameworks reduce concentrations. As such, there is an urgent need tackle this problem by better regulating concentrations these developing upscaling solutions mitigate using advanced, accessible, environmentally sustainable materials, technologies.

Removal of Indoor Volatile Organic Compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde are ubiquitous in indoor environment. 16 Inhalation of VOCs can cause irritations, difficulty breathing, and nausea, and damage the central 17 nervous system as well as other organs. Formaldehyde is even a carcinogen. Removal of VOCs and 18 formaldehyde is thus critical to control indoor air quality (IAQ). Photocatalytic oxidation has been 19 d...

Metal organic frameworks as sorption media for volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds at ambient conditions

In this research, we investigated the sorptive behavior of a mixture of 14 volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (four aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, p-xylene, and styrene), six C2-C5 volatile fatty acids (VFAs), two phenols, and two indoles) against three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., MOF-5, Eu-MOF, and MOF-199 at 5 to 10 mPa VOC partial pressures (25 °C). The selecte...

Nonvolatile, semivolatile, or volatile: redefining volatile for volatile organic compounds.

UNLABELLED Although widely used in air quality regulatory frameworks, the term "volatile organic compound" (VOC) is poorly defined. Numerous standardized tests are currently used in regulations to determine VOC content (and thus volatility), but in many cases the tests do not agree with each other, nor do they always accurately represent actual evaporation rates under ambient conditions. The pa...

Indoor Volatile Organic Compounds and Chemical Sensitivity Reactions

Studies of unexplained symptoms observed in chemically sensitive subjects have increased the awareness of the relationship between neurological and immunological diseases due to exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, there is no direct evidence that links exposure to low doses of VOCs and neurological and immunological dysfunction. We review animal model data to clarify the rol...

Measurement of Volatile Organic Compounds

To answer critical questions regarding the interactions between green plants and air quality, two three-year projects are underway to investigate emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from selected plant species. These biogenic VOC (BVOC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) can react in the lower atmosphere in the presence of sunlight to form ozone and secondary particulate matter, the principa...
